Grant T. Harward, Phd
Award-winning Author
Historian of the Romanian Army, the Eastern Front, and the Holocaust
Books
This book rights the widespread myth that Romania was a reluctant member of the Axis during World War II. Investigating why Romanian soldiers fought and committed such atrocities, the author argues that strong ideology—a cocktail of nationalism, religion, antisemitism, and anticommunism—undergirded their motivation.
Într-un context european marcat de creÈ™terea naÈ›ionalismului È™i a extremismului, cartea „Războiul Sfânt al României. Militarii, motivaÈ›ia È™i Holocaustul” este o lectură esenÈ›ială. Volumul demonstrează consecinÈ›ele dezastruoase ale manipulării ideologice È™i ale urii etnice, subliniind totodată importanÈ›a asumării responsabilității istorice.
The complex and fascinating story of Romania's 'turning of arms' against Nazi Germany, and the battle for Romania - an important but overlooked and misunderstood episode of World War II.
Praise for Romania's Holy War
"
Soundly structured, masterfully argued, and utterly unique, Romania's Holy War is the first rigorous history of the motivations of Romanian soldiers during the Second World War.

Grant T. Harward “propune o reevaluare a rolului pe care România l-a jucat în războiul declanÈ™at de Germania nazistă împotriva Uniunii Sovietice la 22 iunie 1941, dintr-o perspectivă mai puÈ›in abordată de istoriografia românească: aceea a motivaÈ›iilor rasiale È™i naÈ›ionaliste care au stat la baza violenÈ›elor comise de trupele româneÈ™ti în teritoriile eliberate din Basarabia È™i nordul Bucovinei”.

Romania's Holy War integrates military history into broader stories of interwar Romania and the history of the Holocaust, attending to social and gender history along the way. This astonishing book is sure to generate lively discussion.
Roland Clark, University of Liverpool, author of Holy Legionary Youth
